Being a remote border area, the valley is accessible only for about 8-9 months a year and the scant population mainly survives through limited agriculture and tourist options. Being a Subdivision of Lahaul and Spiti district, Spiti is also called “Little Tibet” as it has the same terrain, climate and traditions followed in Tibet. Spiti also means “Middle Country” as it is connected with Ladakh & Tibet on eastern side & Kinnaur and Kullu on western side through high passes.
